Choosing a WhatsApp Business API provider in India

citable answer

A WhatsApp Business API provider (Meta calls the role a Tech Provider, and the older term was BSP) is the company that connects your business to the WhatsApp Business Platform and gives you software to work in. The choice that matters is structural, not promotional: whether the WhatsApp Business Account is created under your own business or held under the provider's, and whether Meta bills you directly for messages or the provider resells them to you at a markup. Those two answers decide what switching costs you later.

Verified Tech Provider on the WhatsApp Business Platform

Every provider in this market describes itself as official, approved or authorised. The words are close enough to identical that they tell you nothing, and they are not what you will regret in two years’ time.

What you will regret is structural. Two questions decide it, and both have concrete answers a provider can give you today.

Question one: whose account is it?

Your WhatsApp Business Account can be created under your own Meta business, with your provider given permission to operate it. Or it can be created under the provider’s business, with you added as a guest. On day one these look the same and send messages equally well.

They stop looking the same the day you want to change provider. If the account is yours, you revoke one permission and grant another. If it is theirs, you may be starting again — a fresh account, templates resubmitted for review, and in the worst case a new number on packaging and invoices you have already printed.

With TarkApp the account is created under your business, through Meta’s own signup flow. You keep it if you leave. We would rather earn the renewal than hold the number.

Question two: who bills you for messages?

Meta charges for template messages delivered, priced by category and by the country you are messaging. There are two ways that cost can reach you.

Under the Tech Provider model, your business is billed by Meta directly at Meta’s published rates, and your provider charges separately for its software. Two lines, both visible.

Under a reseller model, the provider buys messages and sells them on to you. The per-message price you are quoted is theirs, and the margin inside it is not something you can see.

TarkApp uses the first. Meta bills you; we do not resell or mark up your messages. If you are comparing providers, ask each one which model they use and ask for the two costs separately — a low platform fee can sit on top of expensive messages, and a cheap per-message rate can hide a heavy monthly minimum. Our plain guide to the WhatsApp Business API explains how Meta’s charging actually works, including which messages cost nothing.

What to ask any provider, including us

Whose WhatsApp Business Account will this be?
If it is created under the provider's business, migrating later means a new account, re-approved templates and, in the worst case, a new number on your packaging.
Who bills me for conversations — Meta, or you?
A reseller can quote a low platform fee and recover it on message markup. You cannot compare two providers until both lines are separated.
What happens to my number and templates if I leave?
Ask for the answer in writing. Assets you own move with you; assets held on your behalf may not.
Is the software actually built for how my buyers message?
Indian B2B ordering arrives as voice notes, photos of handwritten lists and Hinglish product names. A broadcast tool with a chat inbox is a different product from an order desk.
What happens when the AI is unsure?
There should be a defined path to a human, not a confident guess written into your order book.

What actually happens when you come aboard

Connecting takes minutes. Being genuinely live takes longer, and most of the remaining time is Meta’s review queue rather than ours. Here is the whole ladder, including the steps other people leave out.

  1. 1
    Connect your WhatsApp Business Account

Through Meta's own signup flow. It creates the business portfolio, the WhatsApp Business Account and the number as you go — you never open Meta's developer tools. The account belongs to your business.

  2. 2
Add a payment method with Meta

Because Meta bills you directly for conversations, the card sits on your side, not ours. This is the step most often missed, and messages fail quietly without it — so it is a visible item on your checklist rather than a surprise.

  3. 3
    Get your display name approved

Meta reviews the business name buyers will see. This is Meta's timeline, not ours, which is why we will not promise you a date for it.

  4. 4
    Put your message templates live

Business-initiated messages must use templates Meta has approved. You start from a working set rather than a blank page.

  5. 5
Connect your catalogue and your books

Tally, Busy, Marg, Odoo — or a spreadsheet, or nothing at all to begin with. This is the step that turns replies into priced, stock-checked orders instead of just faster typing.

  6. 6
Go live on the number your buyers already use

Nothing changes for them. No app to install, no portal, no new habit.

What you will need to bring

Frequently asked

What is a WhatsApp Business API provider?

It is the company that connects your business to the WhatsApp Business Platform and supplies the software you actually work in. Meta's current name for the role is Tech Provider; you will still see the older term BSP, or Business Solution Provider, used for the same thing. Two things sit behind that label: the connection to Meta, which is largely the same wherever you go, and the software on top, which is not. Providers differ far more in the second than the first.

Who owns the WhatsApp Business Account — me or the provider?

It depends entirely on the provider, and it is the single most important question to ask. A WhatsApp Business Account can be created under your own Meta business, with your provider given permission to operate it, or it can be created under the provider's business with you as a guest. Both send messages perfectly well on day one. They differ enormously on the day you want to change provider. With TarkApp the account is your own — you keep it if you leave.

Do I pay Meta or the provider for messages?

Both models exist. Under the Tech Provider model your business is billed by Meta directly for conversations, at Meta's published rates, and your provider charges separately for its software. Under a reseller model the provider buys messages and sells them on to you, so the per-message price you see is theirs, not Meta's. TarkApp uses the first model: Meta bills you, and we do not resell or mark up your messages. Ask any provider which of the two they use, and ask to see the two lines separately.

Do I need a Facebook or Meta developer account?

You need a Facebook login, because that is how Meta verifies who is authorising the account. You do not need a developer account and you never touch Meta's developer tools — the signup flow creates the business portfolio, the WhatsApp Business Account and the number inline as you go.

What do I need before I can connect?

Four things. A Facebook login for whoever can authorise the business. A phone number that is eligible — one not currently active on the WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app, or one you are ready to migrate. A website or other web presence for the business. And later, once you want to send business-initiated messages at volume, a payment method added on Meta's side for conversation charges.

Can I keep my existing WhatsApp number?

Usually yes. A number already on the WhatsApp Business app can be migrated to the platform, but it is a one-way move that needs preparing: once a number is on the API it no longer works in the ordinary WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app. Many businesses prefer to start on a second number and move the main one once the desk is running. Either is fine; the mistake is doing it on impulse.

How long does it take to go live?

Connecting the account itself is quick. What sets the real timeline is everything after it: your display name being approved by Meta, your message templates being reviewed, and your catalogue or accounting system being connected so that orders come back priced and stock-checked. We would rather tell you that plainly than quote a number that only covers the easy step.
