It books. It does not diagnose.

There is a clean line through healthcare and it is not a matter of taste. Finding a doctor, checking whether a hospital takes your insurer, booking a slot and moving it are logistics. Anything about a symptom is not, and no amount of care in the wording makes an agent the right thing to answer it. This page is mostly about where the line is.

Can an AI assistant book medical appointments safely?

It can find the right specialist, check which hospitals accept an insurer, book and reschedule slots, and arrange home collection for a lab test — all of it directory and calendar work. Anything symptom-shaped stops immediately and goes to a person. It does not assess, advise or interpret a result.

The refusal below is the part to test, not the booking.

Find, book, move, remind4

Four things that are calendars and directories rather than medicine

uc-155

“I need a skin specialist”

— a specialty, and a slot at the end of it

What you'll observe

The right specialist from your own directory and an appointment in a slot that is genuinely open. Which specialty is right for a described problem is not the agent's call — if the patient has not named one, it asks or hands over.

uc-156

“Which hospital near me takes this insurance?”

— a directory question wearing a medical coat

What you'll observe

Answered from the network and location data you hold. No clinical judgement is involved in it and none is offered.

uc-159

A diagnostic-lab booking, with home collection

— the test named, the slot chosen, the collection arranged

What you'll observe

The booking is made and the collection window confirmed. When the results come back, they are not interpreted — not summarised, not flagged, not put into plainer words.

uc-157

Moving an appointment, in the patient's own language

— reschedules and reminders are where most no-shows actually live

अपॉइंटमेंट कल का कर दीजिए

“Please move the appointment to tomorrow.”

UC-157HINDIJAIPURMUKTA

What you'll observe

Moved against real availability and confirmed in the language the patient wrote in. A reminder nobody can read is a reminder nobody acts on.

Where it stops, deliberately3

Three refusals — and the first one is the behaviour this page exists to be checked on

uc-158

Anything symptom-shaped stops immediately

— a described problem, an ache, a worry, a photograph

What you'll observe

It stops and hands to a person. It does not narrow the possibilities, suggest which specialist the symptom points to, or say whether something sounds urgent — all three are clinical judgements and all three are easy to make sound like admin.

This is the refusal worth testing, because it is the one an agent is most tempted to be helpful about. Being helpful here is the failure.

uc-032

A clinic's own enquiry line

— appointment intent captured, medical questions hard-refused

What you'll observe

The appointment part of a message is taken and the medical part is not answered, even when they arrive in the same sentence. Splitting the two is the work.

uc-092

Medical equipment on rent

— dates and a deposit, then a person for the contract

What you'll observe

Availability for the dates and what the deposit is, from your own terms. The contract itself goes to a person — a rental agreement for equipment somebody depends on is not a thing to conclude in a chat window.

Questions people ask before they try it

Where exactly is the line between booking and advice?

Anything that requires knowing something about the patient's condition is advice, including which specialist a described problem calls for. Finding a named specialty, checking a network, booking, moving and reminding are logistics. When a message contains both, the logistics are handled and the rest goes to a person.

Can it read a prescription or a lab report?

It can carry a document to the right place in your system. It does not interpret one — not the values, not the summary, not whether something looks concerning. A readable summary of a result is a clinical act performed by software, and it stays out of scope no matter how convenient it would be.

What if a patient describes something urgent?

It stops and hands to a person immediately rather than assessing urgency, because assessing urgency is the clinical judgement. Routing quickly to a human is the correct behaviour and the only one we build for.
